What our homepage looks like today
We, the members of Querencia, develop self-sufficient communities first in Costa Rica then in Central America that revitalize a sense of place, community, local landscapes, and sustainable resource flows.
We especially value security in all senses, physical, educational, economic, and psychological. Querencia will do everything possible to achieve these.
Querencia Costa Rica will be an ecovillage in the outskirts of Costa Rica's capital, composed of Costa Ricans and foreigners, that will actively demonstrate sustainable lifestyles and promote such lifestyles here and abroad.
The community will have an organic farm, a state-of-the-art environmental education and interpretation center and will embody most of the values commonly found in ecovillages, such as learning, conflict transformation, holism, consensus, sharing, connection to the land, to other people, and to oneself, spirituality, frugal in quantity, rich in quality. We would also maintain our members' ecological footprint to the world average (1.8 ha/person in 2001).
Our location near the capital will facilitate our connection to helping urban centers at the very same time we move in the long-term toward self-sufficiency. Techniques of interest include permaculture, alternative energies, waste recycling, non-denominational spiritual unity, organizational learning, biodiversity conservation, and others.
The profile of a Querencia member might include some of the following:
*Values all forms of life
*Desirous to build something for a better world, rather than just live happily ever after.
*Committed to mission of education about sustainability
*Open-minded, tolerant, always learning
*Desirous to continue growing intellectually and spiritually
*Values relationships over material as principal form of wealth
*Any age, religion, race, sexual persuasion
*Have specific skills or resources to offer the community or willing to learn a new and significant skill set
*Has demonstrated compassion for people beyond immediate circle of known individuals
We invite all interested in a sustainable lifestyle to visit our website and sign up for email announcements or listserv for deeper involvement.
Currently Querencia is forming a legal cooperative, which is a non-profit, community-run enterprise which under Costa Rica law enjoys a great deal of support. Our cooperative would specialize in sale of educational, touristic, capacity-building, interpretive, and outreach services.
Writer Barry Lopez introduced the Spanish word, querencia, into English as "a place on the ground where one feels secure, a place from which one's strength of character is drawn -- a place in which we know exactly where we are -- the place from which we speak our deepest beliefs."
