In 1994, a few Vermont faeries rented a large house at a former summer camp and began to host gatherings of northeast faeries. They raised money and defined a vision of community. When the house was sold, they had to move on, but the nonprofit corporation continued. In June 1997, with much fund-raising and excitement, 150 acres was purchased to become a faerie sanctuary in New England. Land once held as the property of King George III is now in the stewardship of faeries, and the stone-walled meadows are filled with maple and beech, hemlock and fern, deer, owls, a moose, and occasionally faeries.
Currently, we camp on the land, with temporary shelters, and are learning about the land. We have created trails from the stream on the bottom to the meadow at the top as well as a kitchen area and fire circle. A permit process is under way to build a gathering center with kitchen and bathing facility as a first step in meeting our mission. Eventually, we will establish a community of residents and a winter retreat space. Other visions include hospice care and a museum/archive of radical faerie history and culture.
In 2002 we purchased an additional 16 acres and we receieved our state permits to build. In the intervening years we have expanded our road access, created open space and we've begun building.
