Under the Umbrella Pines
Like bees looking for an ideal place to build a hive, we sent out scouts to find land where we could settle and plant maté trees. Just outside of the large and modern metropolis of Curitiba, a city touted as the most “ecology-minded” in Brazil, among rolling hills and tall umbrella pine, we found just the spot.
It was winter when we set ourselves to build, and the going has been slow, but after more than four years, progress has been made. A small and thriving community made up of nine families, their children, and a handful of single men and women has sprung up. Gardens have been planted, chickens are being raised, and fruit and nut trees are being planted, as are the maté trees.
Our little “maté farm” is connected to a household tucked into a quiet neighborhood just inside Campo Largo, a city of one hundred and twenty thousand, just outside of Curitiba. There, busy men and women handle the in’s and out’s of Tribal Trading Company and Tribal Brasil Organics, an exporting and importing team set up to sell not only maté tea, but other Brazilian commodities like organically-certified mascavo sugar and honey gathered from the seasonal wild flowers of northeastern Brazil’s highlands, to be sold to communities in North America, Europe and Australia.
With the rooster’s crowing and early morning bird songs, our communities in the Curitiba area rise to meet the day, singing, dancing and harmonizing with themselves and the One who created them. These “sons of God” are common folk who have left the ranks of the movie-minded, morally-decaying society, for the solid traditions of a culture designed by the God of Israel. Daily, with one mind, they strive to live out their ideals in the most practical way possible, cooking their food with wood fires, cultivating their fields with hoe and straw hat and home-schooling their children. These are the people you would find at the farm, men and women of faith, full of hope for the future, trusting in their Creator for their daily bread and for the protection that comes from his hand.
Meanwhile, members of the Tribal Trading team are poring over paperwork, trying to get container-loads of green maté herb, gourds and strainers off to Germany, France and England… These, too, are full participants in a thriving community, right there in the city. Made up of three families, and a number of single men and women, their life is similar to the life lead by those at the farm. Rising early in the morning, they dedicate themselves in faith to the One who called them out mainstream Brazilian society. Then they go about their daily tasks…
We invite anyone interested in visiting or staying with us for a while to please come. Our doors are open to all who have a sincere heart, looking for truth and true identity…

Visitors Accepted
Visitor Process: They should first of all be ready to participate with us in everything we do. That means getting up with us, eating their meals with us, etc. Then they need to get here, bringing with them modest clothing for work (and a nicer set for social times). Next, they should contact us and tell us they are coming, telling us of their plans and making sure we can accommodate them. Then they should arrange for their transportation, get here, find us, and, well, we'll pick them up at the bus station or airport and welcome them to our house! We welcome all who are interested in what we are doing and are seeking a meaning for their lives.
